Variants (parent and child items)
Items in several versions as in JTL-Wawi – a parent item with variations (colour, size …) and one child item per combination with its own item number, its own stock and inherited master data.
A T-shirt in three colours and four sizes is one parent item with twelve child items in allverto – just as in JTL-Wawi. The parent item describes the product (name, texts, categories, characteristics, tax …), but is itself not sellable and has no stock of its own. Each child item is a full item with its own item number, EAN, its own stock and its own price rules.
Creating a parent item
- Create the item as usual (name, description, sales price, categories) and save it.
- Open the Variants tab and click Make parent item. This is only possible as long as the item has no stock and no reservations.
- Create the Variations: name (e.g. "Colour") and the values, separated by commas ("Red, Blue, Green"). Create variation saves immediately.
For each value you maintain:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Value | Name of the value, e.g. "Red" or "XL" – change it directly in the field, save with Enter |
| Gross surcharge | Added to the parent's sales price (negative = reduction) |
| SKU suffix | Part of the child's item number; allverto suggests it from the name ("Size XL" → "SIZEXL") |
| Colour / image | Only with the display type Colour swatches or Image selection – for shop and POS |
You change the order of variations and values by dragging the handle on the left (or with Alt+↑ / Alt+↓ on the handle). It determines the order in the child's name and in the selection.
Generating child items
In the Variants tab, click Generate child items…. The Preview shows all missing combinations with item number (parent SKU + SKU suffixes, e.g. SHIRT-M-ROT), name and price. Combinations whose item number is already taken are marked red and won't be created. Select the rows you want and click Create … child items.
The list below shows all child items with combination, price, stock, reserved and status. Double-click opens the child in the item window. Via right-click you change the combination or detach a child from its parent (it becomes a single item and keeps its values). With Assign existing… you turn an existing single item into a child.
What child items inherit
Unless you set something else, a child item takes over from its parent: name (as "Parent name, Colour Red, Size M"), short description and description, SEO texts, manufacturer, brand and responsible person, product group, labels, categories, characteristics, custom fields, tax class, RRP, unit and content, weights, dimensions, shipping class, customs tariff and origin, dangerous goods, safety information, item condition and delivery status. If you change the parent, all children change with it.
A child's price is the parent's sales price plus the surcharges of its values.
At the top of a child's item window you'll see Child item of … with a link to the parent. Every inherited field carries the marker Inherited next to its label and is read-only. Clicking it turns it into an own value – the field can then be edited freely. If you click own again, the parent's value applies again. You can also see all areas together in the Variants tab under Inheritance. The change takes effect with Save.
Never inherited: item number, EAN/GTIN, MPN, status, stock data (reorder point, procurement type, fixed bins, serial numbers/batches), price rules, images, documents, suppliers, cross-selling and sales channels.
Selling and warehouse
- In orders, quotes and at the POS, only the child item can be ordered. If you choose a parent item in the item search, the variant selection opens.
- Stock and reservations are handled via the children. allverto rejects postings to a parent item. In the item overview, the parent shows the total of its children.
- A parent item can't be a set (bill of materials); a child item, on the other hand, may be a set or a component of a set.
In the item overview
The Variant column shows "Parent · 6 children" or a child's combination. In the Quick filter you show and hide Parent items, Child items and Single items individually – this keeps the list clear even with many variants. Via right-click: Open parent item, Detach from parent item and Create child items (opens the Variants tab; a single item becomes a parent item after a confirmation). In the preview at the bottom, Linked items → Child items shows all children.
Import from JTL-Wawi
During the JTL migration, parent items, variations, values and child items are imported. Fields in which a child differs from its parent in JTL (e.g. its own price) remain own values; everything identical is inherited from the parent from then on. Surcharges of the variation values are imported as far as the Wawi database provides them.
