Digital receipt, email receipt and receipt output

GuideLast checked on 18/10/2026

Decide per POS whether the receipt is printed, issued digitally via QR code or email, or asked about every time; what the customer sees on the digital receipt page and what to consider legally.

Instead of a paper receipt, the POS can issue a digital receipt: the customer scans a QR code with their phone or gets the receipt by email. You set what happens after each sale per POS.

Setting the receipt output

  1. Sales → Settings, then click the POS on the left under POS.
  2. Receipt template tab, the Receipt output section at the top.
  3. Choose under After the sale and Save:
SettingWhat the POS does
Print receipt (default)After each sale the receipt is printed (or shown as PDF in the browser).
Digital receipt (QR code/email)No printout: the POS immediately shows a QR code with the link to the digital receipt and offers to send it by email.
Ask every timeAfter each sale the POS asks “How would the customer like the receipt?” – Printed, Digital (QR code) or By email.

Anyone whose role has the permission Set up the POS (branches, registers, TSE, terminals, receipt) may change it. In the POS settings tab you see the current choice under Receipt after sale and get here via Change receipt output….

At the POS

In the receipt dialog after payment, Digital receipt, Email, PDF and Print are always available regardless of the setting:

  • Digital receipt shows a large QR code: “Scan with a phone camera to get the digital receipt”. The link is shown below it.
  • Email opens the Customer email address field; Send receipt sends the receipt as a PDF attachment with the link to the digital receipt.

You can issue earlier receipts the same way: Menu → All receipts, choose the receipt, then Print, PDF, Digital receipt (QR code to photograph) or Email – handy if the customer needs the receipt again later.

If a customer display is running, it shows the QR code of the digital receipt after payment – the customer can scan it right there.

What the customer sees

The QR code leads to the Your receipt page – no sign-in needed. It shows the complete receipt with all mandatory details and the TSE QR code, plus the Save as PDF button. The digital receipt looks like the printed one – with header and footer text and the receipt design from the receipt template (see Setting up the POS). The link contains a long, random key; anyone who has it can see the receipt. The page reminds the customer to share the link only if others may see the receipt.

Legal notes

A German receipt must be issued for every sale (Belegausgabepflicht, § 146a (2) AO); an electronic receipt fulfils this obligation if the customer agrees (AEAO on § 146a no. 6). If the customer wants a paper receipt, print it. It is best to agree with your tax advisor whether and how you use the digital receipt.
