Categories and category master data

GuideNewLast checked on 22/10/2026

Create categories in the category tree and maintain them in the category window – sort number, visibility and discount per customer group, online shops and POS, descriptions per language, attributes, custom fields and category images.

Categories organise your items – as in JTL-Wawi. In the category tree on the left of the item overview you filter the list; in the category window you maintain a category's master data for the online shop and POS.

Using the category tree

  • Clicking the name selects the category (the list shows its items including subcategories). If it has subcategories, it expands at the same time.
  • Clicking again on the selected, expanded category collapses it. The arrow in front expands and collapses without changing the selection.
  • Double-click or right-click → Edit… opens the category window.
  • With + or right-click → Create subcategory… you create a new category – the category window opens empty, with the selected category already entered as the parent category.
  • Rename… (F2), Move… and Delete… (empty categories only) still work directly in the right-click menu.

The category window

The window runs in the allverto window system: you can move it, resize it and detach it into its own browser window. allverto remembers its size and position for you. Save with Save or Ctrl+S.

General

AreaMeaning
Parent categoryWhere the category sits in the tree; below it you see the full path.
NameMandatory field, unique per level.
Sort number0 to 65,000 – lower numbers appear higher up in the shop.
Internal keySequential number of the category, display only (e.g. for interfaces).

Visibility/discounts: for each customer group you specify whether the category is visible in the shop and POS and which discount items in this category get. If you have no customer groups of your own, consumers (B2C) and business customers (B2B) are listed here.

  • Apply visibility to all subcategories and items – once, when saving: all subcategories get the same visibility, and the items in them get the function attribute sichtbarkeit_kundengruppe (visible customer groups). If all groups are visible, the attribute is removed.
  • Also apply discount to all items in subcategories – the discount then also applies to items that are only in subcategories.

Online shops/POS: for each sales channel – including the POS, if set up – you switch the category active or inactive. If you switch a channel off here, all subcategories and items below it are switched off for that channel automatically when you save. With Activate/deactivate all subcategories and items you apply this once, when saving, to all subcategories and their items (Sales channels tab in the item). No change leaves them as they are. Marketplaces (Amazon, eBay, OTTO, Kaufland …) and B2B channels are not listed here – they have their own categories.

Descriptions

Choose the Language at the top (German and your company's languages for item texts). For each language you maintain:

  • Description – with the same editor as for items (bold, lists, links, category images).
  • Meta title and Meta description – title and text in search results; the counter shows the recommended length.
  • URL path – e.g. kaffee-espresso. From name generates it from the name. It must be unique per language.

In other languages, empty fields fall back to German.

Attributes

As in the item window: attributes and function attributes with value, language and channel. You manage the attributes themselves under Items → Settings → Attributes – see Attributes and function attributes.

Custom fields

Additional fields for categories, e.g. "Banner text" or "POS colour". You create them under Items → Settings → Categories (type, group, mandatory field) – separate from the items' custom fields.

Category images

Upload images (JPG, PNG, WebP up to 8 MB) by selecting or dragging them. The first image is the main image. Change the order with the arrows, Alt+← / Alt+→ or via right-click; you maintain the alt text on the right. Images are available after a new category has been saved for the first time. Changes to images take effect immediately.

Migrating from JTL-Wawi

During migration, allverto imports categories with parent category and sort number – and, where the source provides them, description, meta title, meta description, URL path and visibility per customer group.
